ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic led to national lockdown measures, implying individuals' household confinement, constraining active contact with outdoor nature, with potential associated mental health consequences. Hence, this cross-sectional correlational design study with 310 participants examined the relationship between self-reported measures of variety and intensity of indoor/outdoor activities involving contact with nature, life satisfaction and affect during the first nationwide lockdown in Portugal in 2020. Results showed a positive weak association between indoor activity intensity and positive affect, and between reported indoor mental recreation of contact with nature and negative affect. Actual indoor contact with nature was positively associated with life satisfaction and positive affect. Individuals without a variety of contact with indoor nature reported lower life satisfaction than those with high variety. Indoor contact with nature seemed particularly important for well-being during lockdown. During prolonged household confinement, mental health and well-being could be promoted through outdoor contact but indoor alternatives should also be considered.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the changes that occurred during the pandemic of COVID-19 in urban water consumption in residential, commercial, industrial, and public agencies in the city of Sao Leopoldo, southern Brazil, which has about 55,000 consumers and over 200,000 inhabitants. Overall, the city increased water consumption by 5.6% during the 2-year pandemic, with 5.9% in 2020 and 5.5% in 2021. Residential and industrial consumption increased by 6.77 and 9.92% in the first year, and by 5.47 and 14.45% in the second year, respectively. On the other hand, commercial and public sector consumption decreased, respectively, 5.48 and 46.26%, in the first year, and also 1.83 and 40.99% in the second year. In the first months of the pandemic, there was a sharp increase in residential water consumption at the same time as a reduction in consumption in the other categories. In contrast, there was a slight return to previous water consumption patterns in the following months. Overall, we can affirm that the more central neighborhoods presented higher changes in water consumption than the peripheral neighborhoods. In addition, the water consumption during the pandemic and pre-pandemic periods was statistically different for residential, industrial, and public consumers.

ABSTRACT

Among the problems caused by the pandemic of the new coronavirus (SARS-COV-2), besides the irreparable loss of loved ones and the damage to global health caused by the disease, the restrictions imposed and the economic losses incurred by them stood out. Given the sudden changes imposed on the routine of society and companies, many businesses went bankrupt, while the other survivors needed to adapt quickly, resulting in a routine based on home office, ecommerce and distance learning. The educational sector was strongly affected by these restrictions, as well as the assets linked to it, as highlighted by the cumulative annual drop of 22% of the IFIX (index of Real Estate Investment Funds), witnessed by investors during the arrival and spread of the pandemic in Brazilian territory. Thus, the work was based on the prospective analysis of scenarios through the Momentum method, producing three possible future scenarios for the recovery of the educational REITs (Pessimistic, Optimistic, and Trend), with the help of three financial planning specialists. At the end of this study, it was possible to configure the scenarios: "The recovery of education REITs" as optimistic scenario, "Challenges of education REITs" as trend scenario, and "The crisis of education REITs" as Pessimistic scenario.

ABSTRACT

Background: Among the paediatric population there was no increase in asthma related morbidity with COVID-19. This study aimed to evaluate the pattern of the lung function tests after SARS CoV-2 infection. Method(s): Retrospective characterization of 79 paediatric patients with lung function tests performed after 6-8 weeks of SARS-CoV- 2 infection, between March 2020 and December 2021. Some endpoints were analysed like asthma as a comorbidity, lung function measurements, body mass index (BMI) and hospitalizations. Result(s): The mean age of this sample was 12.2 +/- 2.1 years old [4;17], 59% were male and 53% had asthma. The non asthmatic children were younger (10.1 +/- 1.8 years old). Body mass index (BMI) was calculated for all patients at the time of lung function test, 56% had a normal weight (n = 40), 37.9% were overweight (n = 30), and 11.3% (n = 9) were obese. More than a half of the non asthmatic group had a normal weight (58%, n = 24), 33% were overweight (n = 10) and 33% were obese (n = 3). In the asthma group, 40% (n = 16) had a normal weight, 67% were overweight or were obese (n = 20 and 6, respectively). None of the involved children had restrictive pattern post COVID-19, nor an obstruction, and as for diffusion tests, all the results were in between the limits of normality. Only one non asthmatic patient was hospitalised. Three asmathic patients reported post COVID-19 symptoms, like tiredness, hyposmia, and chest pain for a period of 6 month at least, as well four non asthmatic patients, with similar symptoms. Conclusion(s): Taking into account lung function tests performed after COVID-19 infection, there was no negative impact in asmathic/non asthmatic children outcomes. However there is a higher proportion of asmathic overweighted/obese children with COVID-19 infection, which reinforce that metabolic syndrome seems to play an important role on this disease.

ABSTRACT

Antarctica is the southernmost continent of our planet, and it has been verified as the coldest region on earth. The Brazilian Antarctic Program (PROANTAR) has as its main objective the promotion of high-quality scientific research in the Antarctic region, seeking to understand the events that occur there. PROANTAR, coordinated by the Navy Commander, has some sectors that are based in Brazil and others that are located in the Antarctic continent. The military that volunteers to occupy any vacancy that is allocated to that continent needs, besides passing through several pre-established criteria, to pass the selection process. The purpose of this article is to help the Naval Administration in the selection of volunteer officers to occupy a vacancy in the Antarctic continent. To obtain the alternatives, the officers that best fit the established vacancy, and the criteria to be evaluated, Value-Focused Thinking (VFT) was applied. Next, with all the necessary data, the CRITIC-GRA-3N method was used as a Multicriteria Decision Support (MDS) technique, the CRITIC-GRA-3N method, the CRITIC Importance Through Intercriteria Correlation (CRITIC) method to obtain the criteria weights and the Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) method, with three normalizations, to order the alternatives. At the end of the application of the methods, the article can generate five ordinations of the volunteer officers to occupy the vacancy offered in PROANTAR. © 2022 The Authors. ABSTRACT

Investments should be decisions made by companies at a strategic level, aiming to maximize the return on invested capital. However, the evaluation required to obtain the best results demand, in addition to information about available assets, the ability of decision-makers to relate and weigh all the criteria that must be maximized or minimized to achieve the expected goal. This article plays an important role in supporting the decision making of a micro company, located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, which needs to invest the available amount in investment. In order to obtain the investment alternatives, as well as the evaluation criteria, the Value-Focused Thinking (VFT) was applied. After obtaining all necessary data, the CRITIC-GRA-3N method was used as a Multicriteria Decision Support technique, with the CRiteria Importance Through Intercriteria Correlation (CRITIC) method to generate the criteria weights and the Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) method, with three normalizations, to order the alternatives. With this, five ordinations were established, being the first three ordinations performed with the help of two normalizations and the last two ordinations being the arithmetic and geometric averages of the first three ordinations normalized with the third normalization. In the end it brought positive results to the microenterprise. © 2022 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

ABSTRACT

The arrival of COVID-19 meant a drastic change in the way of teaching and research. This paper explores the effect that the measures taken to contain the COVID-19 spreads have had on the research activities of teachers about variables such as area of knowledge, educational level, and role in projects or gender. To this end, an online survey was designed to collect data, requesting information about time lost in research, the number of papers proposed for publication in scientific journals, difficulties in managing research projects, guarantees in project funding or the capacity to reformulate research activities. Two hundred seventy-one teachers and researchers were asked to participate. Among the main results, most respondents agree on the difficulties in managing their projects;they have been forced to reformulate their research, although they claim that the time lost in research has been limited. The results will help to make decisions on the measures to be taken to alleviate the low performance of research by teacher-researchers during this period and to prepare contingency plans to reduce the impact. © 2022, Iris Betzaida Pérez-Almeida et al;published by UIKTEN. ABSTRACT

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in substantial changes in social interactions, work schedules, and socioeconomic factors that may negatively impact sleep onset, maintenance, and quality. The ongoing stress of the pandemic also may exacerbate existing racial/ ethnic disparities in sleep health. In this study, we examined the effects of COVID-19 related distress on sleep-related impairment and sleep disturbances among trauma-exposed South Asian adults. Since a health advantage among foreign-born individuals has been previously noted in the literature (the immigrant paradox), we also assessed whether generational status (i.e., being born in the U.S. or not) moderated associations between COVID-19 related distress and sleep outcomes. Methods: Participants were recruited through Amazon's Mechanical Turk and completed online surveys on demographic information, the COVID-19 Stress Scale, The Life Events Checklist for DSM-5 (LEC-5), and PROMIS™ Sleep-Related Impairment and Sleep Disturbances Scale. The final sample included 316 South Asian adults residing in the U.S, who had been exposed to a traumatic event at some point in their lifetime. Most participants were male (55%) and U.S.-born citizens (64%), with an average age of 35.32 (SD = 9.52) years. Results: Examination of t-scores for PROMIS™ sleep-related and sleep disturbances revealed that our sample endorsed slightly higher values than the general U.S. population. Greater COVID-19 distress was associated with more sleep disturbances (b = 0.09, p < .001, sr2 = .04) and sleep-related impairment (b = 0.20, p < .001, sr2 = .12). Generational status was not associated with sleep, nor did it modify associations between COVID-19 distress and sleep. Conclusion: In our sample, we found that psychological distress triggered by the pandemic (e.g., fear of contamination, fear of the dangerousness of the virus, socioeconomic worries) was associated with greater sleep difficulties. Our findings highlight the importance of developing targeted interventions to cope with stress and sleep disturbances during the pandemic, particularly among vulnerable populations, such as those exposed to trauma. Our results did not support the immigration paradox: stress and sleep associations were similar regardless of generational status. Future studies are needed to better understand the role of generational status on sleep across different immigrant subgroups.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The nursing care management of frail older people in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic requires the development of innovative actions. Those new interventions aim to meet the older population needs thru continuity of care, preventing previously existing health conditions from deteriorating and promoting their quality of life. Thus, the conception of the nursing teleconsultation (TC) is seen as an innovative answer to the ever-increasing frailty problem, in the sphere of gerontotechnology and the current pandemic challenges. Methods: This paper shows an action-research methodology. There were 8 participants, of which 5 were nurses of the health care centre (USFX) and 3 frail older people that were identified using the Tilburg Index. The instruments used were the face-to-face consultation flowchart and the nursing guide to direct the intervention. All the ethical and deontological principles were respected throughout the study. Result: The nursing teleconsultation was developed based on a script of a nursing theoretical model that has been recognized as an important tool to promote the care of older frail people by continuing to promote the Care-of-the-Self in the pandemic circumstance. Conclusion: The TC implementation is a nursing intervention that is effective on assessing and controlling frailty on older people, besides being a way of promoting adherence to the therapy plan, preventing complications of frail conditions and fighting loneliness that many older people are exposed every day. The material resources are available in the health care centres, what makes the TC implementation easier to achieve. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

The consequences of the pandemic caused by the new coronavirus in the most diverse sectors of the Brazilian economy, are overwhelming, and its effects are still difficult to measure completely. There are several possible scenarios being considered, such as prolonged depression, 'U' or 'V' recovery. Due to such volatility, risks and uncertainties, the investor, before investing, must carefully analyze the alternatives available in the market. Given the above, this article aims to propose different ways of distributing a financial portfolio, considering five investment funds, which were evaluated in the light of five criteria, by two investors who work in the financial market. Therefore, the SAPEVO-M-NC multicriteria decision aid method was used to evaluate the alternatives, as well as their composition in the investment portfolios. The adoption of the methodology made it possible to carry out the distribution of the portfolio in a clear and consistent way, showing itself as an efficient practical tool for the proposed approach. © 2021 The authors and IOS Press.

ABSTRACT

Background: Critically ill patients with COVID-19 frequently presents Acute kidney Injury (AKI) associated with increased mortality. However, there is paucity of data from Brazil. So, we analyzed factors in associated with AKI patients in a university hospital. Methods: We conducted an observation with frequencies and association with binary logistic regression study in patients with COVID-19 hospitalized at Hospital Sao Paulo- Federal University of Sao Paulo. Diagnosis and classification of acute kidney injury (AKI) were by KDIGO. We examined the rates of renal function, mechanical ventilation (MV), renal replacement therapy (RRT), medications and in-hospital mortality. Results: We observed a total of 172 in-patients with COVID-19. Patients were predominantly male (61,5%). We observed hypertension in 55%, diabetes 34%, smokers 27%, obesity (19%). Eighty-nine (52%) patients needed intensive care unit (ICU)], 70 (79%) cases of AKI were in ICU (31% of general ward admissions;p<0,001). In the ICU there were 78% needed mechanical ventilation, 36% in RRT, amine vasoactive 65% and mortality in 48%. AKI patients were older (61±15, 55±15;p=0.01), higher creatinine in admission (2.6±1.6, 1.3±0.7;p=002), higher RDW (14.7±1.5, 13.3±1.6;p=0.08), needed of MV (88%) and vasoactive amine (90%), RRT (88%) and higher mortality (87%). We used serum creatinine, age, RDW, mechanical ventilation and vasoactive amine in model of regression. We observed that MV (OR 1026 [CI95%, 1009-1038;p<0.001) and age (OR 1030 [CI95%, 1004-1056;p=0.002) were independently associated with AKI. Conclusions: AKI is associated with high rates of RRT and death. Higher age and need of mechanical ventilation were associated with AKI in COVID-19 patients.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to analyze the effects of social isolation on children's and teenagers' development, with emphasis on the possible impacts over their physical and mental health. DATA SOURCE: Review of the literature following the standards of PRISMA using the SciELO, LILACS and PubMed databases. The following key-words were used: "social isolation" and "child development", "quarantine" and "adolescent development" according to the Medical Subject Headings (MESH) and their translation to the Portuguese. Studies in English, Portuguese and Spanish from inception were included. DATA SYNTHESIS: 519 studies were screened and 12 were included in the systematic review. Five of those focused the psychology and social issues, two of them the effects of pandemics on these issues;four studies reported on impacts on general health and two consequences over the hypothalamus- hypophysis - adrenal axis and the cognitive and social development. CONCLUSIONS: The review shows a strong association between social isolation and anxiety and depression in children and adolescents. Social isolation leads to higher levels of cortisol and worse cognitive development. Therefore, the mental and physical health of children and adolescents need a careful follow up by health professionals during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study aimed to analyze the temporal trend of incidence, mortality, coverage of wards and intensive care beds, and rigid social isolation in the Ceara State and correlate them. Methods: Ecological study, which outcome variable was the mortality rate. Predictors were incidence, occupation rate of bed wards and intensive care beds, and social isolation rate. It was performed a multiple linear regression considering significant when p<0.05. Results: It was observed an increasing trend of incidence and mortality by COVID-19 in the Ceara State (p = 0.01). On the other hand, it was seen a decreasing trend in the occupation of wards and intensive care beds (p = 0.02). The social isolation rate significantly decreased during the period (p = 0.001). In the multiple linear regression, social isolation remained inversely related to mortality by COVID-19 (beta = 0.08;p = 0,02). Conclusion: It was seen the effect of rigid social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemics. The anticipated implementation of it, with other public health actions, showed relevance to guarantee the continuity of its benefits.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The high demand for adequate material for the gold standard reverse transcription real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR)-based diagnosis imposed by the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, combined with the inherent contamination risks for healthcare workers during nasopharyngeal swab (NP) sample collection and the discomfort it causes patients, brought the need to identify alternative specimens suitable for the diagnosis of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work was to compare saliva and gingival fluid swabs to NP swabs as specimens for RT-qPCR-based SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis. METHODS: We compared gingival fluid swabs (n = 158) and saliva (n = 207) to the rayon-tipped NP swabs obtained from mild-symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects as specimens for RT-qPCR for SARS-CoV-2 detection. FINDINGS: When compared to NP swabs, gingival fluid swabs had a concordance rate of 15.4% among positive samples, zero among inconclusive, and 100% among negative ones. For saliva samples, the concordance rate was 67.6% among positive samples, 42.9% among inconclusive, and 96.8% among negative ones. However, the concordance rate between saliva and NP swabs was higher (96.9%) within samples with lower cycle threshold (Ct) values (Ct > 10 <= 25). MAIN CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggests that whereas gingival fluid swabs are not substitutes for NP swabs, saliva might be considered whenever NP swabs are not available or recommended.
